Child-Centered and Emergent Approach to Curriculum
At Finch, we wholeheartedly embrace a child-centered and emergent curriculum approach, valuing the interests, needs, and experiences of each child as the foundation for our curriculum planning and learning experiences. We believe in allowing the curriculum to evolve organically, guided by the genuine curiosity and inquiries of the children.
Finch mentors keenly observe and listen to the children, seeking to identify their unique interests, questions, and ideas. Utilizing this invaluable insight, we plan learning experiences and activities that hold genuine meaning and relevance to the children’s lives. We recognize and celebrate children as natural learners, inherently curious and eager to explore the world around them. Our emergent curriculum encourages active engagement, problem-solving, and critical thinking, as we empower children to delve into topics they are truly passionate about.
Embracing a play-based and child-centered learning environment, we provide children the time and space to explore and make choices. Our approach fosters a positive and enriching educational experience that respects and celebrates the diversity of each child's interests and capabilities. At Little Finch, we cherish each child's individuality and strive to cultivate a joyful, inquisitive, and meaningful learning journey for all.
Core Routines
Finch curriculum, activities, and projects are thoughtfully inspired by the core values drawn from "The Coyote's Guide to Connecting with Nature" and the teachings of the Academy of Forest Kindergarten Teachers trainings. Embracing the wisdom of this guide, we weave the core values into our daily practice, including sit spots, the story of the day, expanding our senses, questioning and tracking, animal forms, wandering, mapping, exploring field guides, journaling, survival skills, mind's eye imagination, listening to bird language, and giving thanks.
To get a glimpse of how we put these core values into action, we invite you to read some of the journals we have written, showcasing how we integrate them into our enriching learning experiences, and to watch our Core Values video on the home page!
